Navigation is a complex topic. Once mastered it will give you confidence to explore the hills, moorlands and mountains of the UK either by yourself or with friends knowing where you are and where you’re going (or what to do if temporarily misplaced). Book between one and five days on this navigation course and get the information you need tailored to you.
During this course I will aim to introduce you to the topics below with time to go and practice the skills you learn. It will run with a maximum of 1 instructor to 6 participants so you know you’re getting the attention you need. It’s a practical course based in the mountains of the UK, come prepared to head into the hills and use them as our classroom.
The topics covered could include:
- Measurements, pacing and timing
- Route finding
- Night navigation
Night navigation is an optional extra. For coursed booked over more than one day, I offer the option to travel under the stars and remove that fear of getting “caught out” by the dark. We only go out for a short period of time (not the whole night, so don’t worry you’ll still get to sleep!). This will give you a chance to practice the skills needed to navigate in the dark. This isn’t compulsory for completing a course so it’s up to you if you want this element.
Maps and compasses can be provided as part of the course though I’m always happy for people to bring their own so we can look at pro’s and con’s of different designs.
Accommodation is not included.
Locations for the course will be discussed upon booking. Should we not be able to agree a suitable destination you’ll not be charged. I run most courses in the Scottish highlands, however it’s possible to run longer course in other locations which I frequently visit including Snowdonia and the Lake District.
Please choose between one and five days for your course.
